June 1

Do not let the past disturb you. Leave everything in the Sacred Heart of Jesus and begin again with joy-St. Theresa of Calcutta

Sacred Heart of Jesus

Before all else, June is a month devoted to Jesus’ most Sacred Heart.  It is fitting that we open this month of June with this devotion.  It is only through the grace of Jesus’ Most Sacred Heart that any of us can live as purely as His heart.  The secular world touts June as “Pride Month”, a month for rejoicing in homosexual behavior.  A month to relish in such sexual sins.  This June, let us try something different.  Let us aim for conversion of heart such that when people see you they can’t help but also see the love of Christ.

What does that love look like, you might ask?  It is not a clean love; it is messy, bloody.  There are several points which the Sacred Heart of Jesus invites us to reflect on as we delve not only into June, but also into His Most Sacred Heart.

For one, we can reflect on His infinite love towards us.  While our love may at times be fleeting, may at time even fail, His love does not.  His love is a tsunami where ours is a drop.  It is never ending and inexhaustible.  Let us hope we have an unquenchable thirst for His love.

Secondly, His Sacred Heart is a lesson in mercy.  Look at the Good Thief which also hung upon the cross on that Good Friday.  He is called the Good Thief because he stole that one last precious thing worth stealing; God’s mercy.  Even there on the Cross as Christ took His last few breaths He deigns to forgive and wants all men to be with Him in Paradise.

Third, we can reflect upon His suffering.  Love necessarily requires some suffering.  It is only through love that enabled Jesus to take up His cross, to endure beatings and humility and yes to even stay upon the Cross and die.

Lastly, a deep desire for holiness.  The Sacred Heart is an invitation to live as Christ lived, and if so called, to die as He did.  It is through this holiness that we can be with Him in the next.  That holiness draws us to be ever more united with the only thing that can truly rest our restless hearts.

I thank you God for all you have given me and made me to be.  I am struggling with the world right now; it wants something you did not make me for.  Please Lord, pour out the blessings of your most sacred heart upon me.  Make me as pure as your Most Sacred Heart so that I may live as you live.  Amen.
